Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14 It originated as the western Christian feast day, Saints holiday in the honor of the saint named as Valentinus. You can have the stories of martyrdom in Martyrologies, with the written document of the Saint Valentine of Rome imprisonment where he got the punishment for performing weddings for a soldier. According to the documentary during his imprisonment, Saint Valentine cured the sight of the girl who was blind and was the daughter of the judge. The interesting point is that before his execution he wrote a letter to her signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church. In the many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day, albeit, on July 6 and July 30, this celebration date is done in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date is in honor of the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) who is Hieromartyr Valentine.
History of Valentine’s Day
It is celebrated to please the soul of a saint named Valentinus. Valentine of Rome was the priest of Rome, he was martyred in 269 and then added to the calendar of Saint by Pope Gelasius in 496 and was buried on via Flaminia. Basically, he was punished just to perform the wedding for the soldier, who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. The remnant of the saint was kept and secured in Church and in Catacombs of San Valentino in Rome. Under Emperor Aurelia in 273, Valentine of Terni became bishop of Interamna and was set to be martyred during the persecution. He is buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location from Valentine of Rome. His remains are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni.
Jack B. Oruch states that “abstracts of the acts of the two saints were in nearly every church and monastery of Europe.“Here is also the third Valentine, in Catholic Encyclopedia, who was mentioned in the early martyrologies on the calendar under the date of 14th February. Well, he was martyred in Africa, because he was involved in different campaigns. Nothing more is known about him.
Well, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as the significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration day of romance and romantic love in the whole world. But interestingly it is not a public holiday in any country. Then the day became associated with the Romantic Love in the 14th century. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”, as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady). The custom and tradition of sending Cards, Chocolates, and Flowers to their loved ones started in the UK. In England, it is still connected with many traditional events. Here is a character named Norfolk, he is just like the Santa. He uses to knock at the door and silently move from there after putting presents for kids.
